Timer / Counter is a component embedded in a microcontroller that is used as a timer. With a timer / counter, a microcontroller user can determine when a command is executed. Timer / counter can be used as an oscillator, PWM, ADC, and others. Timer works by giving a prescaling (frequency divider) on the microcontroller or external clock. Prescaling is used to get the desired frequency. Registers used for Timer / Counter operations on AVR are TCNT, TCCR, TIMSK, TIFR, and OC. TCNT is the enumerator register from 0 to the maximum value that can be determined, TCCR functions for setting the timer / counter operation mode, TIMSK functions to select the timer / counter which is active, TIFR functions to determine interruptions due to timer counter operations and OC registers to store Comparative value with the value in the TCNT register.
